Tension prevailed briefly near the Veeraraghava Perumal Temple on Rice Market Road in Tiruppur after a youth allegedly attempted to attack a police constable with a knife during Vaikunta Ekadashi celebrations on Tuesday.
The Vaikunta Ekadashi festival was being observed at the temple, drawing a large number of devotees. Police personnel were deployed in the area to regulate the crowd and ensure the smooth conduct of the festivities.
While the police were engaged in crowd control, a youth suddenly approached a constable on duty and threatened him with a knife, creating panic among devotees and local residents.
The constable reacted swiftly by removing his belt and using it to defend himself, preventing the youth from carrying out the attack. Other policemen present at the spot immediately rushed in, surrounded the youth and took him into custody.
Police said an inquiry is under way to establish the identity of the youth and to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol or involved in any other offence at the time of the incident. Normalcy was restored soon after the arrest.
