The United Kingdom government has proposed restrictions on issuing study visas to nationals from four countries — Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan — as part of measures to curb illegal immigration and misuse of visa routes.
The move comes as the government led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer steps up efforts to tighten immigration controls amid concerns that some individuals entering the country on student visas later apply for asylum.
Reports indicate that authorities have observed a rise in asylum claims from people who initially arrived in the UK on non-immigrant visas, including education visas. As part of the proposed changes, the government is considering suspending the issuance of study visas to applicants from the four countries. Restrictions on certain work visa routes for Afghan nationals are also being examined.
Officials said data showed that a small percentage of Afghan nationals who entered the UK on education visas later sought asylum.
A new amendment related to the immigration rules was introduced on Thursday as part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen border controls and prevent misuse of visa systems.
