The Communist Party of India has been allotted 5 seats in the DMK-led alliance.
With the date for the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu announced, the ruling DMK, the opposition AIADMK, and the newcomer TVK are intensifying their preparations for the elections.
DMK, which is in the fray with the slogan of winning 200 seats and coming to power for a second term, is holding seat-sharing talks with its alliance parties. A total of 21 parties are in the DMK alliance.
DMK-led alliance has allotted 28 seats to the Congress, 4 seats to the MDMK, 2 seats to the Indian Union Muslim League, 2 seats to the KMDK and 2 seats to the Manithanaya Makkal Katchi (MMK).
In this situation, the CPI which contested 6 seats in the 2021 Assembly elections, has been allotted 5 seats, down one seat. The seat-sharing agreement was signed in the presence of DMK President and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, CPI Secretary M. Veerapandian, and former State Secretary Mutharasan. The seat-sharing agreement between DMK and CPI has been finalized after four rounds of talks.
In the DMK alliance, the Congress Party will contest under its Hand symbol, the IUML under the Ladder symbol, the MMK, under the Rising Sun symbol, and the MDMK will contest under the Rising Sun symbol in 3 constituencies and under a separate symbol in one constituency.
Apart from these five parties, there are a total of 15 parties in the DMK alliance, excluding the party itself. While the DMK leadership has so far allocated 43 seats to six parties in the DMK alliance, talks are ongoing with the DMDK, VCK, the Makkal Needhi Maiam, and the Marxist Communist Parties.
CPI Secretary M. Veerapandian met the media after the seat-sharing agreement.
M. Veerapandian told reporters:
We held three rounds of talks with the DMK. Last time we contested in six seats. We asked for more than that. The CPI has the moral authority for that. We are established across the country as a group, a movement, and a party.
Due to the merger of various parties, we and everyone has reduced the seats. Therefore, the Chief Minister has requested that you reduce it. That is why, under the leadership of the Chief Minister we have signed the seat-sharing agreement today (March 18).
Our primary goal is to defeat the BJP and its alliance, which are trying to destroy Tamil Nadu. We will not deviate from our political position. The BJP wants to destroy the unity in India. We have participated in that democratic war.
DMK never forced us. They only requested us. Since there are many parties in the alliance, the Chief Minister himself asked us to consider. He did not force us. He did not order us. He did not pressure us.
