Erode Corporation officials removed a banner featuring the Chief Minister’s photograph near the District Superintendent of Police (SP) office, citing that it had been installed without the necessary permission from the local body by some TVK functionaries.
In a similar move, officials have spent the past week removing various encroachments, banners, and flex boards belonging to political parties, traders, and social organizations across the city. A team of sanitary workers has been deployed to carry out these removal operations. The civic body emphasized that anyone wishing to display banners in public places must pay the required fees to the local administration and ensure that the displays are removed after the permitted time period.
Regarding the city’s ongoing sanitation efforts, the civic body currently employs 1,700 sanitary workers, which includes 400 permanent staff and 1,300 temporary workers. The daily wage for temporary workers is set at ₹768, as fixed by the District Collector. With a population of 5.5 lakh, Erode generates nearly 200 tons of garbage daily.
Although the number of workers is typically determined by the volume of waste collected, staff members noted that the current workforce is insufficient to meet the ideal worker-to-garbage ratio for a city of this size. Nevertheless, as per government instructions, a special drive to clear encroachments and unauthorized signage has been actively underway across all city areas for the past week.
