Water To Be Released From Amaravathi Dam From Today

The Tamil Nadu Government has ordered the release of water from the Amaravathi Dam in Tiruppur district from Sunday to meet the drinking water requirements of people in Tiruppur and Karur districts and to help raise groundwater levels for drinking water schemes along the Amaravathi river.
As per the order issued on the directions of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, water will be released through the river sluice of the Amaravathi Dam from August 30 to September 7, depending on the storage and inflow into the reservoir.
Water will be released at the rate of 1,000 cusecs a day for eight days. If the inflow into the reservoir increases due to adequate rainfall in the coming days, the release may be extended by another four days at the same rate, subject to the availability of water in the dam and the inflow.
The government said the decision was taken amid inadequate rainfall attributed to the El Nino impact, with the objective of ensuring sufficient groundwater levels for drinking water schemes along the Amaravathi river and meeting the drinking water needs of people in Tiruppur and Karur districts.
