In a significant step toward inclusivity and enhanced passenger safety, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has inducted 20 transgender persons into its security workforce across the metro network.
The Hyderabad Metro one of India’s largest and most advanced urban transit systems, operating across three corridors with 57 stations serves nearly 5 lakh commuters daily.
Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen security, particularly for women passengers, while empowering the transgender community through meaningful employment.
“HMRL is committed to ensuring that all passengers feel safe and comfortable. With women making up around 30% of our daily ridership, their safety and trust remain top priorities,” the corporation said in a statement.
The selected transgender personnel underwent structured training before being deployed at various metro stations, where they will support security operations and passenger assistance.
The Telangana government has been introducing several measures to promote dignity and equal opportunities for marginalized communities.
As part of these efforts, transgender persons were also recruited as Traffic Assistants last year under city traffic management initiatives.
Officials described the latest appointments as a continuation of the state’s commitment to social inclusion and workplace diversity.
