In a remarkable victory of courage over discrimination, 3-foot-tall Ganesh Baraiya from Gujarat has overcome a years-long legal fight to fulfil his dream of becoming a doctor. Today, he proudly serves patients in rural areas, offering medical care to those who need it most.
Born into a farming family in Bhavnagar district, Ganesh weighs less than 20 kg and is physically challenged. Despite this, he nurtured a single dream from childhood: to become a doctor and help the poor. His aspirations faced a major hurdle in 2018 when the Medical Council of India (MCI) denied him admission to MBBS, citing his height as a barrier to practising medicine.
Refusing to give up, Ganesh enrolled in a B.Sc. course while simultaneously challenging the MCI decision with help from his school principal. His first petition in the Gujarat High Court was rejected, prompting him to take the fight to the Supreme Court. Four months later, the apex court delivered a landmark judgment, stating that height alone cannot be grounds to deny admission to a medical course.
Thanks to the ruling, Ganesh entered Bhavnagar Medical College in 2019. He has since completed five years of study and a year of medical training, emerging as a fully qualified doctor this year. He chose to work in rural areas, saying, “The need for doctors is greatest in villages. I want to treat the poor people there.”
Discussing the reactions he receives, he added, “Patients are a bit shocked when they first see me. But then they accept me. It’s natural—and they treat me with love.”
Ganesh Baraiya’s journey stands tall as a powerful reminder that determination, not physical stature, defines a person’s strength.
