The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in April or May. With just a few months left for the elections, political parties have intensified their election campaign.
At the same time, the Election Commission has started and is conducting the Special Voter Registration (SIR) exercise in Tamil Nadu. Application forms have been distributed door to door in Tamil Nadu. Those who have not received the application form are also collecting and filling out applications from the polling booth or BLO where they are voting. The deadline for submitting applications for the ongoing SIR exercise has been extended till the 11th.
The BLOs involved in these tasks are reportedly struggling to function properly. Voters are also in a state of confusion as they are unable to obtain the details of their 2002 vote, as requested in their applications.
In this situation, details of the SIR work carried out so far in all 234 assembly constituencies of Tamil Nadu have been published on the Election Commission of India’s website.
According to the data, a total of 77 lakh 52 thousand people are likely to be removed from the draft voter list in Tamil Nadu, including 25 lakh 72 thousand people who have died, 8 lakh 95 thousand people who cannot be contacted, and 39 lakh 27 thousand people who have been permanently displaced.
It is said that the names of about 10 lakh people in Chennai may be removed. Similarly, it is certain that the names of 1.5 lakh to 4 lakh people in other districts will be removed from the voter list.
The removal of 65 lakh voters in the Bihar voter list revision exercise caused a stir across India. In this context, the news that 85 lakh more voters will be removed in Tamil Nadu than in Bihar has shocked not only the political parties in Tamil Nadu but also the people.
Overall, it cannot be denied that out of the 7.7 million people who are likely to be removed from the voter list, at least a few lakhs may be eligible to be included in the voter list.
Moreover, the number of voters who vote in an election is always at most 70 percent of the total voters. When there are several lakhs of people who do not want to vote, will they be interested in getting their names added to the voter list seriously, and that too within this short period of time?
In addition, many illiterate lay people are unable to provide the information requested in the SIR form. There are also many who are so frustrated that they do not even want to vote.
The SIR work is set to be completed on the 11th, and the revised draft voter list is set to be released on December 16th.
Therefore, we must find those who have not returned their SIR forms in the remaining five days and fill them out. Government officials and authorized party agents must work diligently to include all eligible voters in the list!
