A Chennai Assistant Commissioner and two women police officers have been moved to the waiting list following serious allegations of misconduct in handling a cheating complaint filed by a female IT employee.
The complainant, an IT professional from the T. Nagar police limits and currently working in Canada, had filed a case at the Virugambakkam All Women Police Station after discovering that her Chennai-based boyfriend—an IT employee she planned to marry—was already married.
During the inquiry, Sub-Inspector Benazir Begum allegedly assured her that strict action would be taken. However, she reportedly made the complainant purchase luxury goods and home appliances worth several lakhs online. She also claimed she could help the accused avoid trouble and obtained goods from him as well. With the support of another woman officer, the accused secured bail and left for Canada.
Shocked by the developments, the complainant approached Chennai West Zone Joint Commissioner Disha Mittal. An internal probe was assigned to Assistant Commissioner Balakrishna Prabhu of the Virugambakkam Sub-Division.
Instead of investigating the officers’ actions, AC Balakrishna Prabhu allegedly began contacting the woman on WhatsApp, claiming it was part of the inquiry. He is also said to have instructed her to “stay in isolation” and failed to take action against SI Benazir Begum. The woman submitted WhatsApp evidence to the Joint Commissioner.
Following this, both AC Balakrishna Prabhu and SI Benazir Begum were transferred to the waiting list.
In a separate incident, a young woman who approached Inspector Tahira of the Koyambedu Women’s Police Station, seeking action against a boyfriend who made her pregnant and refused marriage, was allegedly asked to send Rs 1,500. No action was taken on her complaint. After she reported the issue to Joint Commissioner Disha Mittal, Inspector Tahira too was moved to the waiting list.
Investigations into both cases are currently underway.
