The Central government is set to introduce Bharat Taxi, India’s first cooperative-based app-driven transport service, in the national capital from January 1, providing a new alternative to private cab aggregators such as Ola, Uber and Rapido.
Officials said the service will be operated by the Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Society and all arrangements for its launch in Delhi have been completed.
The Bharat Taxi app will offer services including cars, auto-rickshaws and bike taxis, and will be available for download on both Android and iOS platforms.
Passengers can register on the app using their mobile numbers, enter pick-up and drop-off locations and track their journeys in real time.
The app is designed to be user-friendly and will feature transparent fare structures, multilingual support and 24-hour customer service.
A strong emphasis has been placed on passenger safety. Security features include the deployment of verified drivers, integration with Delhi Police and other relevant agencies, and the option for users to share trip details with family members or friends.
Officials said strict measures have been incorporated to prevent uncontrolled fare hikes during peak hours.
The platform also aims to address common commuter grievances such as drivers refusing trips or cancelling bookings, with dedicated mechanisms to resolve complaints promptly.
Bharat Taxi follows a cooperative ownership model, with drivers themselves as stakeholders.
This model is expected to improve driver earnings and working conditions. Under the system, drivers will receive up to 80 per cent of the fare directly. A monthly loan assistance scheme has also been introduced to support drivers financially.
According to officials, about 56,000 drivers have already registered on the Bharat Taxi app. A successful trial run has been completed in Delhi.
A similar pilot project is currently under way in Rajkot, Gujarat, where the service is expected to be launched on February 1. The government plans to gradually expand Bharat Taxi to over 20 cities across the country.
