The Forest Department has temporarily closed the Coimbatore Courtallam waterfall for tourists following a surge in water flow caused by continuous southwest monsoon rains in the Western Ghats.
Heavy rainfall over the past two days has led to flooding at the popular tourist destination, prompting officials to prohibit visitors from entering the falls as a precautionary safety measure.
Located in the Western Ghats and managed by the Coimbatore Forest Division, Coimbatore Courtallam attracts large numbers of tourists from Coimbatore and neighbouring districts. Visitors are transported from the entrance to the waterfall in Forest Department vehicles after parking their vehicles at the designated area.
Forest officials said the inflow to the waterfall had increased significantly due to the ongoing monsoon, making it unsafe for tourists to bathe. As a result, the eco-tourism site has been closed temporarily until the water level recedes. The department has appealed to tourists to cooperate with the restrictions and assured that visitors would be permitted once conditions become safe and normal.
