For the first time, a woman officer has been appointed as the Superintendent of the Central Jail in Srinagar.
According to a government order issued on Monday evening, four officers were appointed as superintendents of various prisons in Jammu and Kashmir. Among them, Saba Shawl, a 2012-batch officer of the Jammu and Kashmir Prisons Department, has been appointed as the Superintendent of Srinagar Central Jail.
Prior to this appointment, Saba Shawl was serving as Staff Officer in the office of the Director General of Prisons, Jammu and Kashmir. She had earlier worked as Public Relations Officer in the Jammu and Kashmir Prisons Department.
A resident of the Bir Bagh area in Srinagar, she holds a Master’s degree in Social Work and cleared the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission examination in 2012.
Officials familiar with her work described her as an experienced officer with strong knowledge of prison administration and expressed confidence that she would effectively handle the responsibilities of the post.
Srinagar Central Jail is one of the oldest prisons in Jammu and Kashmir and houses more than 900 inmates, including political detainees. The facility is guarded by the Central Industrial Security Force and the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
In the past, several foreign militants and separatist leaders were lodged in the jail before many of them were later shifted to prisons in other cities, including Jammu and Palwal in Haryana.
