A wedding celebration in Rajasthan turned into a tragedy after a six-year-old girl was shot dead during illegal celebratory firing, leading to the groom’s arrest just hours before his wedding.
The incident took place in Jesai village in Khairthal–Tijara district, where groom Rahul had celebrated his engagement on November 22. During the festivities, Rahul was reportedly dancing with his friends when he pulled out an illegally purchased handgun and fired shots into the air — a banned but still prevalent custom in parts of North India.
One of the bullets struck Veena (6), the daughter of Rahul’s friend Satpala Meena, who had attended the ceremony with her family. The bullet hit her in the head, causing her to collapse instantly. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite intensive treatment, she died shortly after.
Police arrived at the scene and arrested the groom, cancelling the wedding that was scheduled for the following day. Rahul’s friends who were also involved in the illegal firing fled the spot, prompting police to launch a search operation to trace them.
Authorities strongly condemned the dangerous practice of celebratory firing, warning that strict legal action will be taken against all those responsible. The incident has left the village in shock and sparked renewed calls for enforcing stricter controls at wedding functions.
