A man arrested for attacking a woman police officer during an anti-mining protest in Chhattisgarh was paraded through the streets wearing a garland of sandals before being produced before a court, triggering wide public attention.
The incident occurred in the Raigarh district, where protests against mining activities had been under way since December 12.
On December 27, more than 300 protesters gathered at the site, following which police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.
During the protest, a group of agitators allegedly assaulted a woman police officer who was on security duty.
The attackers reportedly beat her, tore her uniform and verbally abused her, forcing her to retreat from the spot.
A video of the assault was recorded by the protesters themselves and later circulated on social media, leading to strong condemnation.
According to the Chhattisgarh Police, five persons have been arrested in connection with the incident so far, while a search is on for one more suspect believed to be involved.
The prime accused, identified as Chitrasen Sahu, was taken in a public procession by woman police personnel, garlanded with sandals and later produced before a court.
Videos of the procession have since gone viral online.
Police officials said stringent action would be taken against all those involved, reiterating that any attack on police personnel, especially women officers, would be dealt with firmly under the law.
