In a reflection of changing times and digital convenience, a young woman from Karnataka got engaged to her Canada-based fiancé through an online ceremony after he was unable to secure leave from work.
The groom, Suhas, hails from Chakrabavi village in Magadi taluk of Ramanagara district near Bengaluru and is currently employed in Canada. The bride, Meghna, is a native of Udupi district. With both families having already finalised the alliance, the wedding has been scheduled for January 7 and 8.
Ahead of the wedding, the families decided to hold the engagement ceremony. However, as Suhas could not travel to India due to work commitments, the families opted for a virtual engagement.
The ceremony was held at a wedding hall in Udupi, where Meghna was seated on the dais along with her family members, while Suhas’s parents and relatives were also present. A large LED screen was installed at the venue, through which Suhas participated live from Canada.
The engagement rituals were performed as per traditional Brahmin customs. Notably, while the ceremony took place at noon in Udupi, it was midnight in Canada, highlighting the 12-hour time difference bridged by technology.
The online engagement has drawn attention as a symbol of how digital platforms are increasingly becoming part of even the most traditional family ceremonies.
