The Railway Protection Force seized 22 kg of ganja, estimated to be worth Rs.11 lakh, from a train at the Coimbatore Railway Station on February 16 and handed it over to the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau–CID for further action.
According to officials, the Crime Prevention and Detection Squad of the RPF, Coimbatore, was conducting a special drive against illegal transportation of contraband at around 6.50 a.m. when personnel noticed an unattended rexin bag in a suspicious manner on board Train No.11013 LTT–Coimbatore
Express. The bag was found placed in the vestibule between the guard coach and the rear general compartment at Platform No.3 on the Tiruppur end.
Despite enquiries, no passenger came forward to claim ownership of the bag.
The team opened it around 7 a.m. in the presence of witnesses and found dry cannabis, weighing approximately 22 kg, classified as a commercial quantity under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
The contraband was taken to the RPF office on the instructions of RPF Inspector Upendra Kumar. NIB-CID Inspector O. Radha was informed and reached the RPF office at about 8.30 a.m., where the narcotic substance was formally seized under Section 42 of the NDPS
Act.
A case has been registered in Local Crime No.08 of 2026 under Sections 8(c) read with 20(b)(ii)(C) of the NDPS Act. Further investigation is under way.
