Uttarakhand villages ban fast food, costly wedding gifts

In a significant move to curb social pressure and prevent families from falling into debt, more than 20 villages in Uttarakhand have banned fast food, extravagant gifts, alcohol, and modern DJ celebrations at wedding ceremonies.
Across India, weddings are often treated as a measure of social standing, pushing families to overspend—even taking loans—to host grand celebrations. Village leaders in Chakrata taluk of Dehradun district say the new restrictions aim to restore simplicity and protect households from unnecessary financial strain.
The gram sabhas have passed resolutions directing that weddings should follow traditional customs without modern excesses. Serving noodles, momos and other fast-food items has been prohibited. Costly gifts for the bride and groom have also been disallowed.
Modern musical shows, DJ parties and alcohol consumption at wedding venues have been banned as well. Violations will attract a hefty Rs 1 lakh fine, to be imposed by the respective gram panchayat.
Villages under the Jaunsar-Bawar region have passed similar resolutions, strengthening the cultural shift toward modest and tradition-focused celebrations.
Residents have welcomed the move, saying it will help revive local food culture and ease financial burdens. “The ban on fast food at wedding receptions is a welcome step,” said Karmu Pal, a resident of Kiawa village. “It is heartening that dishes made from locally grown grains will now be served. This will help the younger generation reconnect with our traditional foods.”
Village leaders believe the initiative will promote responsible spending, preserve cultural identity and ensure that weddings remain meaningful without becoming economically overwhelming.
