In a significant step towards boosting water-based aviation, the country’s first seaplane was successfully tested at the Ganga Barrage in Rishikesh.
With India possessing vast coastlines and inland waterways, efforts are underway to introduce seaplane services in regions where conventional airports cannot be developed, particularly to enhance tourism connectivity. As part of this initiative, Skyhop Aviation is working to launch commercial seaplane operations in Rishikesh.
The company’s seaplane carried out a successful test flight on April 6, demonstrating smooth take-off and landing on the Ganga River, indicating the feasibility of regular seaplane services in the region.
Avani Singh, founder of Skyhop Aviation, said the test marked a major milestone and that the company is currently in the process of obtaining necessary air transport certifications. Commercial operations are expected to begin once approvals are secured.
He added that the company is also planning to expand seaplane services to the Lakshadweep region, with an initial proposal to operate 19-seater aircraft connecting five islands.
