KMCH introduces region’s first drug-free blood clot removal procedure

Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) has successfully performed a complex mechanical thrombectomy using the Rotarex Atherothrombectomy System, becoming the first hospital in Tamil Nadu outside Chennai to deploy the advanced technology for drug-free blood clot removal.
A middle-aged man was admitted to KMCH with severe pain in his right leg for 10 days. Investigations revealed a critical arterial blockage caused by a blood clot that had travelled from his heart to his leg. Doctors said the condition posed a serious risk of limb loss if left untreated.
Unlike conventional thrombolysis, which relies on prolonged administration of clot-dissolving drugs that carry risks such as severe internal bleeding and intracranial haemorrhage, the Rotarex system mechanically breaks and removes the clot in a single procedure. The “No- Lytic” approach eliminates the need for clot-dissolving drugs and significantly reduces the risk of major bleeding complications. Dr. Nalla G. Palaniswami, Chairman and Managing Director, KMCH, said the achievement reflected the hospital’s commitment to bringing world-class medical technologies to the region. He said the introduction of the Rotarex and Jetstream systems would enable patients to access advanced, minimally invasive vascular treatment without travelling to metropolitan cities.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Mathew Cherian, Head of Interventional Radiology, with the support of Senior Interventional Radiologists Dr. Pankaj Mehta and Dr. Santhosh P. The clot was completely removed, restoring blood flow immediately. The patient experienced instant relief and was able to walk and resume normal activities the following day.
KMCH said it is now equipped to manage a wide range of arterial diseases. In addition to the Rotarex system for removing soft clots and plaque, the hospital has also performed the region’s first Jetstream Atherectomy procedure to treat heavily calcified arterial blockages and blocked stents, reducing the need for permanent stent implantation.
Dr. Arun Palaniswami, Executive Director, KMCH, said the successful outcome highlighted the hospital’s focus on patient safety and clinical innovation. He congratulated Dr. Mathew Cherian and the Interventional Radiology team for establishing a new benchmark in advanced vascular care in the region.
