Desilting work on the Kondanur check dam near Anaikatti in Coimbatore district has commenced, with Kavundampalayam MLA Kanimozhi Santhosh inaugurating the project at a ceremony marked by a bhoomi puja.
The check dam is located in Kondanur village, under No. 24 Veerapandi Panchayat.
During the monsoon, the structure stores rainwater, helping recharge groundwater and raise water levels in agricultural wells and borewells.
Residents and farmers in the area had been demanding desilting of the check dam for the past 12 years. After their request was brought to the attention of MLA Kanimozhi Santhosh, she assured them that steps would be taken to address the issue.
Following this, the desilting project was approved and the work has now begun. Residents said the project would help conserve rainwater during the rainy season, improve groundwater levels and provide a better water source for farmers, livestock and wildlife.
They thanked the MLA and officials for taking steps to fulfil their long-standing demand.
