The transfer of a police inspector known for his upright functioning has sparked widespread debate in Andhra Pradesh, with police unions alleging political pressure behind his frequent postings. Sriram, the first inspector of the Dana Police Station in Poduttur, had assumed charge on December 18 and earned public appreciation within a short span for his strict and impartial approach. Refusing to yield to political pressure, he focused on curbing antisocial activities and restoring discipline in the region. Soon after taking charge, Inspector Sriram summoned known rowdies, cricket gambling operators, habitual offenders and even politicians with pending criminal cases to the police station. He reportedly warned them sternly and advised those with cases to appear before courts without evasion. He also took strong action against the illegal sale of liquor in rural areas, drawing praise from villagers. Due to his firm policing and transparent conduct, Sriram’s popularity among the public reportedly increased significantly. Residents viewed his presence as a deterrent to crime and a rare example of honest policing. However, barely 40 days into his tenure, Inspector Sriram has now been transferred, triggering sharp reactions. Police union representatives alleged that sustained pressure from political quarters was responsible for the sudden move. According to union leaders, Sriram has been transferred as many as 30 times over the past 18 years of service, solely due to his refusal to compromise on integrity. They strongly condemned the repeated transfers, describing them as a “punishment for honesty” and warning that such actions demoralise sincere officers across the force.
