Australia appoints first female Army Chief in 125 year history

In a historic move, Australia has appointed its first-ever female Army chief in the 125-year history of its defence forces.
Lieutenant General Susan Coyle (55), currently serving as Chief of Joint Operations, will assume office as Army Chief from July, succeeding Lieutenant General Simon Stuart.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as part of broader efforts to strengthen and modernise the country’s defence leadership.Defence Minister Richard Marles described the appointment as a landmark moment, stating that it would inspire more women to pursue careers in the armed forces. Susan Coyle, who has served in the military since 1987, has held several key leadership roles during her career and now becomes the first woman to head any branch of the Australian Army. Women currently account for about 21 per cent of the Australian Defence Force, with 18.5 per cent in leadership roles. The force aims to increase women’s participation to 25 per cent by 2030.
The appointment is also seen as a significant step amid ongoing efforts to address issues related to gender equality and workplace safety within the defence forces.
