Indonesia bans social media use for children under 16

Indonesia has announced a ban on the use of social media platforms by children under the age of 16 as part of efforts to protect minors from online risks.
Communications and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid has signed an order prohibiting minors from opening or operating accounts on major digital platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and X.
According to officials, the new regulation will be implemented in phases starting March 28, allowing digital platforms time to comply with Indonesian laws and enforce the age restrictions.
Explaining the move, Hafid said children are increasingly exposed to serious online threats including pornography, cyberbullying, online fraud and drug-related influences.
“Our mission is clear. Our children face real threats every day. They are vulnerable to pornography, cyberbullying, online fraud and especially drug addiction. This action is aimed at protecting the future of our children,” she said.
The development comes shortly after Indonesian authorities conducted surprise inspections at the Jakarta office of Meta as part of wider efforts to ensure compliance with digital regulations.
