Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation has launched a free cremation service for Below Poverty Line (BPL) families at all crematoriums it manages across Tamil Nadu. The initiative was inaugurated in Chennai by the Minister for Municipal Administration, K.N. Nehru, who praised the Foundation’s service, noting that Isha-managed crematoriums have facilitated over one lakh cremations with dignity and proper procedures.
The new service aims to ease the financial burden on economically disadvantaged families during the final rites of their loved ones. Isha currently operates 17 gas crematoriums in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu government and is preparing to take charge of three more.
For the past 15 years, under Sadhguru’s guidance, Isha Foundation has been managing crematoriums in various districts, reviving traditional rituals and practices with a focus on service rather than commercial intent. The processes are carried out with sensitivity to support grieving families.
Isha-managed crematoriums are located in Chennai, Vellore, Thanjavur and Coimbatore district, including Nanjundapuram, Veerakeralam, Thudiyalur, Podanur, Vellalore, Alandurai, Thondamuthur, Karamadai and Goundampalayam.
All facilities operate in accordance with Pollution Control Board and Tamil Nadu government norms for gas-electric crematoriums. Isha also undertakes environmental and infrastructural enhancements such as creating landscaped surroundings, planting tree cover, improving pathways and maintaining hygienic bathing and toilet facilities.
To ensure the sanctity of final rites, Isha provides specialised training to crematorium staff for respectful handling of the deceased. A dedicated mandapam is available at each facility for traditional rituals.
Guided by Sadhguru’s vision, the Foundation plans to expand the initiative nationally by adopting 1,000 to 3,000 crematoria across the country, restoring their traditional sanctity and offering dignified service to all.
