Mojtaba Khamenei Chosen as Iran’s new Supreme Leader

Mojtaba Khamenei, son of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been selected as the new Supreme Leader of Iran by the country’s Assembly of Experts.
The development follows the death of Ali Khamenei in a large-scale military strike carried out by the United States and Israel targeting key locations in Tehran, the political and administrative centre of Iran.
Following the incident, confusion prevailed over the succession to the country’s top leadership. The Assembly of Experts, which is responsible for appointing the Supreme Leader, had earlier appointed Alireza Arafi as interim leader while consultations were under way.
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, the Assembly of Experts has now reportedly chosen Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, to assume full leadership of the country.
Mojtaba Khamenei had long been considered a potential successor and is known to have influence within Iran’s religious and political circles.
However, the move has raised questions within sections of Iran’s political establishment as the Islamic Republic has traditionally opposed dynastic succession in leadership.
The development comes as tensions continue to escalate in the region, with ongoing military confrontations involving Iran, the United States and Israel over the nuclear issue.
