Railway Police seized 44 kg of high-grade ganja smuggled from Assam to Coimbatore during a surprise inspection at the Coimbatore railway station on Sunday.
With several long-distance trains from northern states passing through Coimbatore en route to Kerala, the Railway Police have stepped up surveillance to curb ganja trafficking. Acting on suspicion, police checked the Vivek Express, which runs from Dibrugarh in Assam to Kanyakumari, when it halted at the first platform.
During the search, police noticed multiple unattended packages concealed beneath seats in the unreserved compartment. On opening them, officials found large quantities of ganja neatly packed.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the contraband was being transported from Assam to Coimbatore. However, no suspects were found at the scene. The seized ganja is estimated to be worth several lakhs of rupees.
Railway Police said a detailed investigation is under way to identify those behind the smuggling. The seized contraband has been handed over to the Prohibition Enforcement Wing for further action.
