Fatou, believed to be the world’s oldest living gorilla, celebrated her 69th birthday at the Berlin Zoo in Germany on April 13.
Originally from the forests of West Africa, Fatou was brought to the Berlin Zoo in 1959 when she was around two years old. As her exact birth date is unknown, the zoo marks April 13 as her birthday each year.
Gorillas in the wild typically live between 35 and 40 years, making Fatou’s age exceptional. Following the death of Ingo, a long-lived flamingo at the zoo, Fatou is now considered the oldest resident animal there.
According to historical accounts cited by the zoo, Fatou was brought to Europe by a French sailor and later sold to the Berlin Zoo.
Due to her advanced age, Fatou spends most of her time in a separate enclosure and prefers limited interaction with other gorillas.
She has lost her teeth and experiences mild arthritis and hearing loss.
Zoo officials describe her as calm and friendly with caretakers despite her age-related health issues.
Fatou is widely regarded as the oldest gorilla currently living in the world.
