In a striking case of tech-enabled crime, police in Gujarat have arrested two men for allegedly stealing jewellery from temples after identifying targets using Google Maps.
The accused have been identified as Pancha Koli from Keddi village and Javed Kanji from Umaiya village, both in Rapar taluka of Kutch district.
The two, said to be close associates, were allegedly involved in thefts reported at temples in Moti Hamirpar village in East Kutch.
According to police, jewellery was stolen from Kotiyar Mataji Temple and Ramdevpir Temple, triggering an investigation by Adesar police.
Acting on a tip-off, officers rushed to the Adesar-Sanva junction where the suspects were reportedly attempting to sell the stolen ornaments.
The police apprehended the duo on the spot and recovered the stolen jewellery from their possession. During interrogation, it was revealed that the accused had used Google Maps to identify temple locations and plan the thefts, a method that surprised investigators. Both accused have been arrested and further inquiry is
underway.
The incident has created concern in the region over the use of technology in committing
crimes.
