Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Wednesday unveiled the renovated statue of legendary artiste N. S. Krishnan, popularly known as Kalaivanar, at the Kalaivanar Arangam complex in Chennai.
Kalaivanar N.S. Krishnan had earlier renovated the kindergarten hall located at the present Omandurar Government Estate and named it ‘Kalaivanar Arangam’.
In 1999, during the construction of a flyover at the junction of G.N. Chetty Road and Thirumalaipillai Road, the statue of Kalaivanar was shifted from its original location and placed by the roadside.
Subsequently, the family members of Kalaivanar requested the State government to relocate the statue from the roadside and reinstall it within the Kalaivanar Arangam premises, in keeping with his legacy and contributions to Tamil theatre and cinema.
Accepting the request, the Chief Minister announced that the statue located on G.N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar, would be renovated and reinstalled at the Kalaivanar Arangam complex. The renovation work was carried out at an estimated cost of Rs. 50 lakh.
Following the completion of the works, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin formally unveiled the renovated statue at the Kalaivanar Arangam.
The ceremony was attended by the heirs and relatives of Kalaivanar N.S. Krishnan, along with members of the South Indian Artistes’ Association.
The event was described as a fitting tribute to Kalaivanar, whose work left an enduring impact on Tamil culture, social reform and political awareness.
